About Anthony Choy
Anthony Choy (b. 1995, Hong Kong) is a contemporary visual artist whose practice bridges structured spatial design and intuitive visual storytelling. Originally trained in architecture, interior design, and urban planning, Choy transitioned to fine art to explore the limits of spatial imagination. This background in structural design, combined with classical training in figurative and still-life drawing, provides a unique foundational tension in his work between controlled form and raw expression.
Choy's artistic evolution is marked by a shift away from calculated, step-by-step figurative replication toward a devotion to mark-making and improvisational processes. At the core of his current practice is automatic drawing—a method that allows subconscious impulses to dictate the initial marks on a surface. Through this fluid process, abstract lines spontaneously transform into complex, imaginary landscapes and enigmatic creatures.
Over time, this practice has expanded from capturing singular, isolated occurrences on canvas into an ambitious exercise in world-building and narrative creation. For Choy, a single 2D surface is no longer just a discrete artwork, but a window into an entire fictional universe. By scaling his drawings and paintings into a cohesive intellectual property (IP), the mythology he constructs continuously feeds back into his practice, inspiring new visual explorations and expanding the boundaries of his evolving world.
Choy's work has been featured in several exhibitions, including the HKAS HDFA Student Show (2023), 39/0 = undefined (2023), DOWNSIDE UP OUTSIDE IN (2024), Collision (2024), and the Comix Arts Fest (2025).
